Compositions: Two Sonnets

1. Spring (Shakespearean Rhyme Scheme)

Harsh winter winds become gentle breezes

The sound of emptiness gradually fills

A drastic change is evident in the seasons

As white melts into green on the hills

Time passes slower, and new plants bloom

housing sweet melodies of the open air

A cloudless blue sky replaces the dreary gray gloom

a kingdom that the birds must share

Stuffy, heated rooms exchange for a clean, fresh scent

The dry prison walls limiting human’s free spirit

and the dreary atmosphere, gone, as if an angel was sent

While cheery, bright-eyed animals make an appearance

It is this time where nature begins anew

signalling new opportunities mankind should pursue.

2. Autumn (Petrarchan Rhyme Scheme)

Bright hues begin to dull down again

As days of freedom and relaxation dwindle

And hard work and determination rekindle

Our focus and learning mindset retrained

Summer heat dies down, a cool breeze remains

As life, plants and animals collectively shrivel

Fallen shrubbery, browning vegetation as a symbol

that Change is near, and nothing is retained.

The crisp air brings the scent of trees

a reminder of our shortened hours

As the temperature drops in degrees,

so do the petals of bright flowers

Dreary gloom returns as does unease

Hinting that bitter winter will soon be in power.
